Hello there tbs community. Let me start by saying that this, in my opinion is a sweet little hack for those of you who
may not have access to limewire. You see, here at school, which is the only place I can get internet access, we often feel the urge to listen to music. Our network admins, being the tremendous pricks that they are feel that yahoo music "distracts" us from working and that limewire is gay. And because they won't listen to me, I started using a site that my friends found online for listening to music and watching videos. You see, the site is called www.musicjesus.com. Its not religious, but because it has the name jesus in the url, I think the school is a bit hesistant to block it. Anyway, let me can listen to the music at school, but I wanted it at home without the internet. So, I took matters into my own hands. Let start by saying this is ILLEGAL. And that means that if you do as I do in this, you could be arrested and thrown into PRISON. So, I Element, take absolutely no responsibility for the actions that are taken from this article. And, I intend to tell the admins of the site about this hole soon, so if you are feeling mischevious, act fast.
I'll start by saying that I'm using firefox for this, mainly because I hate IE. Now, I use firefox because I like working with a bunch of tabs to make this easier. That and the fact that I can't seem to get this to work the same way in Internet Explorer. You should also use a proxy to make yourself anonymous. That way tracking isn't so easy. :D
To start, visit http://www.musijesus.com. Upon entering the site, you see the basic layout of the page. Nothing fancy. I like the band Metallica, so I type Metallica into the search bar at the top and go. Well, look at that, there are all the videos that the band has made to date. So, in this example, I will use the song "Sad but true". Click on it, and a page opens up. On this page, you see a little embedded video that runs. Nothing special there. It even gives links so you can use it on the dreaded black hole that is myspace. Anyway, we wanna rip this baby straight to the desktop. So, lets view the source. You view, and wow, a lot of crap nobody cares about. But, since there was an embedded video file, we need to search for an <embed> tag in the html. So run a quick search for the word embed. You should get a tag that says this:
<embed type="application/x-mplayer2" pluginspage="http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/MediaPlayer/"
src="http://www.musicjesus.com/asx.php?id=37289" width=340 height=300
autostart=true showpositioncontrols=0 volume=-20 showstatusbar="1"></embed>

Now, you see that url thats in there? The one that says "http://www.musicjesus.com/asx.php?id=37289". We need to follow that. Once we do, we get to a page that says this :

<ASX VERSION="1.0">
<ENTRY><REF HREF="http://musicvideocodes.cn/videos/29544.wmv" /></ENTRY>
</ASX>

That is a nifty little ASP redirect. So, follow the link that it's giving, and bam! You now have the link to the music file. Just save the file and it's yours. Now, there are some flaws with this. The site creators have blocked this for some songs by simply making it link to a .asx file. That file then redirects you. And as much as I try to get to the wmv file, I always end up chasing my tail from the same place I started. So, thats pretty much it for this hack. If you happen to have any suggestions on how to get music out of one of those .asx files, please feel free to post it in here or pm me.

P.S. - I think that there are so many of these flaws because there are so many songs on the site. I think that by the time they realized they were screwed, they had already put a lot of videos online. They are probably transferring things even as we speak, or maybe they just don't care.

P.S.S - Limewire works better if you can download it.

there plenty of ways to fetch music.

personally I'm more than happy with
mplayer -ao pcm [put anything hear, like streaming radio channels, there are plenty]

well actually i don't like music that much but if i was that would probably be my first idea,
after a google. inurl:"parent directory" something ".mp3"
or the like.

if you are into popular music those things are fine.
there are also plenty of russian sites...

And heck a drm free song on itunes is less than a dollar ..
(EMI just started with drm free stuff.. support it if you can imho.)

[edit] I don't mean to break down your find ... it's a great addition to the list ;)
actually i just want to suggest more things

Not meaning to sound pedantic, but it often gets tiring reading phrases like:

Let start by saying this is ILLEGAL. And that means that if you do as I do in this, you could be arrested and thrown into PRISON.

For a start, it may be illegal in your country - but it's a big wide world out there, and in some countries it is not illegal, so it's quite unfair to tarnish everyone with the same brush.

Secondly, there are many MANY bands or individual artists who want their music to be free and available to all, purely because they love music and want others to here there creativity. Even if the RIAA cartel you have in your country tells you otherwise it is NOT illegal to download music unless it is under a specific copyright (which granted most 'popular' music is - nonetheless there is lots of other stuff out there).

If you were speaking of the method used to obtain the music, and not the illegality of downloading the music itself then yes, that is probably illegal in more countries but there are still those out there that couldn't give a damn :P

Like I said earlier - don't take this the wrong way - I know you were trying to provide some useful input, but please don't assume your laws apply everywhere :)

Cheers..

good find. i like your use of the asp redirect. to add to rhican's post, a better googledork would be:
"index.of" "parent directory" "[your stuff here]" ".mp3"
this should give you directory listings of people who put their stuff on the net

I appreciate the input guys. And at the time of writing, I hadn't thought that it was not illegal other places, but you are correct, I guess in other countries it would not be illegal. I'm going to try this on other sites too. I'll update you on that in the future.

Hmm, I've never thought of this as a hack. I was always under the impression that any Tom, Dick or Harry with basic HTML knowledge and some rudimentary sense of curiosity would be able to get that link / file. Also, if you're referring to the "hack" that will throw you into prison, then hmm.. I shall reserve my comments to myself. But if you're referring to the download of music that is illegal, then perhaps yes, it might be illegal in some countries as Trav has kindly pointed out. But then again, that's only if you infringe copyright laws.

hmm. I was under the impression that to hack, all that you needed to do was gain some kind of information and/or file that you were not intended to. Now, if you're definition of hacking relates to exploiting a vulnerability in a script, then thats okay. If you want, I can change edit my post to call it html something or other. If that would make things easier and clear up the confusion I mean. And here, yes it is very illegal here. Because exploiting html is even considered hacking in the United States. Also, I would like to know how exactly I can hide my IP address while doing this. Without using an online proxy I mean. Is there any other way?
