Just wondering if anyone has ever setup their own windows/linux server, as i have a spare desktop at home i was planning on setting one up (prob linux). If anyone has any info on setting one up (i heard it can be done legally for free ) then i would be very greatful for any help (such as downloads and stuff). Only thing i will be using it for is a IRC server, TeamSpeak and a website (using mysql db). Thanks |

1. buy / download suse linux 10.0 (i bought over ebay) 2. klick apache2 when you install 3. save your files in /srv/www/htdocs/ 4. open your browser -> localhost 5. if you see your index.htm or other named file it works for mysql: su /etc/init.d/mysql start for teamspeak offical page unzip ./teamspeak2-server_startscript |

that's just a waste of download imho, downloading the gentoo minimal install is a few 100mb and since you don't need graphics or kde: it will probably compile itself faster than downloading all that. - you will learn more - be able to tweak it more - it will run faster - you will never have to handle .rpm steps to install: - download minimal install (or livecd this will allow you to install without much compiling), burn it to disk - partition disk, boot it (also click apache) done. suse has 2 drawbacks these days: - they use rpm - they signed a contraversial deal with microsoft. community support dropped significantly. - microsoft has threatened to sue everybody who uses a different linux flavor than novell. this is FUD. - several suse developers left after m$ deal. using gentoo/ubuntu/fedora: gentoo if you think your pc god ubuntu if it should just work fedora somewhere in between (but has rpm too ) another option is DSL only 50mb of operating system, all the rest can go to your data files basically there are many distro's. linux > windows on the server and it's free as in freedom. direct downloads for many linux distro's ftp://ftp.belnet.be/linux |

well, I thought suse will be well for him since he wanted help, so he isn't that good that he could easily by his own ... if he just wants to get some basic experiences with _web_servers (you did only speak of a server ... a hope and suppose you didn't mean a cs-server) suse linux 10.0 is the easiest way (and he even don't has to work with rpm files...) Quote: they signed a contraversial deal with microsoft. community support dropped significantly. what do you mean? can you please tell me what the deal was about? edit: just read "IRC server, TeamSpeak and a website (using mysql db)." --- You don't have problems with mysql, teamspeak (I always update my first post, if i remember something important / helpful) and webserver ... irc? well, i don't know |

suse certainly is not the easiest. ubuntu is the easiest. no contest. and since he is not paying for it. he doesn't get any support from the company and he will get limited community support. It's a bad choice for him to start experimenting with. if you want paid support go for redhat. irect downloads for many linux distro's ftp://ftp.belnet.be/linux microsoft should name the patents that it claims we foss are infringing, so we can challenge them, or simply stop infinging them. saying you are violating 235 of our 5000 patents (and they have patents on the stupidest things) give us money or we will sue. Linux is a UNIX clone, not a windows clone. there are several technologies that are not implemented in linux because they would violate patents, and FOSS in general wants to be a legal free operating system. They take licensing and such very serious. for example try mocking the gpl in a linux channel . However microsoft can not outlaw anybody from making an operating system. Hence it should say which patents we are suposedly violating so we can fix the issue. the ONI has patents that microsoft is violating, and if m$ sues ONI will fight back. Hence all microsoft can do is pread FUD. which is just bloody childish. ps, this a side-effect of vista sucking so badly. Remember any patent issue in the past? like the mp3 patents, ..., they all named the patents. This is still a fresh topic, and there several countermeasures being prepared. for instance gpl v3 is a powerful tool, there are even vague ideas to preemtively let foss sue itself, in order to clear its name (normal legal procedure). ps: ibm is still > microsoft. and ibm kinda likes linux, just like the majority of fortune 500 companies. hence microsoft really has no chance in litigating. all it wants is spreading fud, and by doing so divide the community, and try to generate some revenu, for something they had no hand in developing. which is lame to say the least. But it's PR machine will do a lot of damage if we don't react accordingly. this is not a moment to put your head in the sand, and lie about suse. I have used several distro's and suse sure is one of the ones that caused me most headaches, for stuff that just didn't want to work, with their binaries. please do not recommend suse, unless you are aware of these issues. Just like you wouldn't buy diamants if you know they are going to fund a genocide in some african country. |

and you have any problems there are great fora over at where somebody probably had your problem before http://ubuntuforums.org/ and you can also aim your irc client to server: irc.freenode.org channel: #ubuntu and #ubuntu-server you can check this one too http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty typing "ubuntu your_problem" in google will also work. ps: the server will not install any gui's (you will have to manage your server via the commandline, or over the network. ) else take the desktop install |
