and since he is not paying for it. he doesn't get any support from the company
and he will get limited community support.

well ... I also didn't pay (only 1 € for the download in ebay) ... and I got support from a lots of forums in the web,
but it is possible, that its only in germany like that ... so I think the support was german (don't remember^^)

this is not a moment to put your head in the sand, and lie about suse.
I have used several distro's and suse sure is one of the ones that caused me most headaches, for stuff
that just didn't want to work, with their binaries.

well, i had a lot of problems with videos getting startet ... but now everything works and
never change a running system ;)

If i have to install my server again, i'll try ubuntu (and perhaps ask you for help?)
thanks for your post rhican

(btw: I realy love Kate :D ... I hope ubuntu has it too :D)

@sniperkid: Im also not realy good in these things ... I just wanted to learn php^^ ... so better do what rhican says ... he can help you if your getting troubles ;)

sure, if i can help, i will.

and SuSe was/is one of the top 10 distro's, and there still is static support for sure. But the ubuntu community
is probably larger by now. and the larger the community the less you'll have to do yourself :)

I probably over react a bit, but i just don't like it :p And then I react fiercly :)
the world won't end from running suse.

But you know the m$ mantra
embrace: novell got mucho $$$ ( 8 zero's ..)
extend: patent stuff, suse is now patent protected,
exterminate: spread fud about sueing.
...

this is a recent issue, still happening right now. So if you have the choice you
might be better of, just avoiding suse on new installs.

Yes it does. SSH is the best ever.

install openSSH (a project from openBSD) and it has a nearly flawless security record (i mean entire openbsd :) ).

you can even open a graphical userinterface through SSH, but then you need to install graphics on the server too.
which you usually don't need. commandline is brilliant :)

infact it's the idea that you allways access a server remotely. just connect to it from your desktop pc, and set up
whataver you need.

@moose: Ubuntu does not have kate installed or in it's repositories, but it takes about 2 minutes to compile and install it yourself. (tar xfvz tarballname.tar.gz -> cd tarballname -> ./configure -> make -> make install.

@sniperkid: Installing(not compiling) any Linux distribution, is nowadays as simple as installing windows. Setting up apache will take you about 2 minutes, as said y before. And if there's any trouble. just google it and the first hit will probably contain the answer:D When you want an easy to use/set up distro with a great community I also recommend Ubuntu.

even a kate-plugins too

http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/editors/kate

it's in universe, not main

Only thing i will be using it for is a IRC server, TeamSpeak and a website

I recently tried to setup an irc-server.
I googled a bit and found an irc server/daemon, which claims to be "high-performance", and so is leight-weight.
You may check it out at linkhttp://www.ircd-hybrid.org.

I had some trouble due install on windows though (their forum seems to got flushed for the new version).
After running the daemon and nothing happening i should have checked the logfile...doh.
I guess the installation/configuration process is better documented when you download the source.

there are several ircd out there, unrealircd is somewhat the most common afaik.
it's pretty neat, yet not the simplest to set up. though should be pretty easy... still
http://www.unrealircd.com/

dancer ircd appears to be in the ubuntu repositories so that should be trivial to set up

teamspeak ... well there only is a binary server for that
you can download it from here
http://www.goteamspeak.com/index.php?page=downloads
this is a thread discussing how to do it
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=236834

apache + php+mysql appears to be the logical choice for the webserver

and then offcourse openssh to rule them all.
