Quote from unstable: maybe you need to upgrade your wetware There are no updates available. And it's closed source so I can't really do much about it. I've contacted the manufacturers aka parents, but they seem unwilling to develop an upgrade. So I guess I'm stuck with web1.0 |

Quote from rhican: I've contacted the manufacturers aka parents, but they seem unwilling to develop an upgrade. Maybe you should review your manufacturer's lifecycle policy? Sounds to me like you've entered the end of life phase a bit early... When did you get your last service pack? You're not even getting hotfixes anymore? If I were you, I'd look into this. Have you done any security audits lately? You should always make sure you keep your wetware up to date. Vulnerabilities and security weaknesses are disclosed every day! You might feel safe because your system is closed source, but security through obscurity is pretty bad practice if you ask me... Especially in this day and age. There are tons of evil scriptkiddies out there, and they will stop at nothing to root your box. You wouldn't want to end up completely defaced on attrition.org, do you? Let me tell you, getting exploited sure ain't pretty! Have you heard of this thing called linux? It's some kind of operating system, and I've heard some people say it can run on just about anything. Alot of people use it to breath some new life into their defunct products, so it might be just what you need. I think LinuxBIOS would be perfect for you. It's an open source project which can be used to replace evil proprietary firmware. What's so neat about it is you can add a complete linux kernel as a payload. You'll love it, you won't even need to reformat your harddisk since you can just boot it from RAM. Quite fast too, you'll boot up in notime! Edit: You might wanna consider SUSE too. Maybe it has better web 2.0 support, I heard it's pretty "novel" these days. Edit2: Flashing LinuxBIOS over your old firmware might be a little tricky. Did your manufacturer provide any OEM software? Maybe there are some useful tools that come with it too. If you can't find any OEM software or technical specifications, you'll have to improvise a little. First thing you should do is make a good backup of your existing wetware. Next thing is getting the following supplies: A magnetic tape, a long metal pole (one of those old tv antennae would be perfect), a computer with a modem (a real one, not one of those fake ISDN or ADSL things, preferably one that is AC'97 compliant), some duc tape and a squeeky duck toy. Now use the modem to stream LinuxBIOS onto the tape. Pull out all the tape and wrap it around the metal pole. Now store it all somewhere dark and dry, and when you see lightning gather all the supplies and climb to the top of some hill. Use the duc tape to tape yourself to the metal pole. It is important that the part of the pole where you started wrapping the tape points to the sky. The squeeky duck toy is just for luck. Now all you can do is wait. I can't guarantee it will work, and you might need to tweak it all a little. Let me know if it worked. |

lolcopter well LinuxBios has yet to run on any mobile technology other than the olpc which was designed for it .. So I'll not run the risk. I believe the manufacturers opinion is that they have started to focus on there core business. Which no longer includes my model. Since there is now a small vacuum in that market segment, they suggest I might want to venture into the domain of product development. Anyway, more collaborating news http://www.itnews.com.au/News/61497,cyberthreats-outpace-security-measures-says-mcafee-ceo.aspx although you have to take everything AV companies publish with a serious grain of salt. Quote: "Citing recent highly publicized corporate data breaches that have beset major companies like Ameritrade, Citigroup, and Bank of America, DeWalt said that cyber-crime has become a US$105 billion business that now surpasses the value of the illegal drug trade worldwide.
